12.11.10. Kaiapoi focus. Charles St, Kaiapoi Visitors Centre: Red stickered, old, wooden, railway station, tilted, pulled about 1 foot S towards Kaiapoi River by quake. Large crack between concrete platform & bldg. Roof damage at E cnr. More tilting, slipping stopped by new, steel cables connected to old, steel, roof pillars on concrete, railway platform. New concrete foundations W of Visitors Centre. New concrete foundations also laid S of bldg to stop more tilting, slipping towards Kaiapoi River. MV Tuhoe sailing ship moored in Kaiapoi River near Visitors Centre. Large cracks in concrete quay.

Charles St, Coastguard: Large cracks in concrete paving next to bldg. Deep void / sinkhole below concrete at NW cnr. Flag pole tilted. Nearby steel lamp posts tilted.

Raven Quay near Courtenay Dr: Kaiapoi true right bank. Downriver below Raven Quay stopbank, wide quake cracks & riverbank slumping towards Kaiapoi River. Some quake cracks about 2m deep. All cracks caused by riverbank lateral spreading. Quake cracks went for several hundred metres along & across the tarsealed track by Raven Quay to Courtenay Stream. Besides riverbank, lateral spreading, Kaiapoi River water caused severe liquefaction damage to nearby Courtenay Dr & houses.

Coda:

Coastguard would survive the quakes. Kaiapoi Visitors Centre would be relocated 100m upriver behind Charles St stopbank, opp New World. Visitors Centre revamped as Paris for the Weekend cafe, estd 2016.
